Position Summary:

The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Worker program provides direct child and family support to all children 0-6 residing on the M’Chigeeng First Nation (MFN) and will assist in carrying out the goals of the Aboriginal Healthy Baby, Healthy Children (AHBHC) program.

This program is designed to assist M’Chigeeng First Nation families in providing the best opportunities for the healthy development of children 0 – 6 years of age through family home visiting, service coordination, and referrals. The program is built on a foundation of Traditional Culture that is incorporated throughout all service delivery practices. This can include: home visiting, education and support, cultural practices, breastfeeding, Pre & Postnatal, nutrition, growth and development, FAS / FAE, parenting, bonding, building self-esteem, healthy and safety and cultural teachings. The elements of this program are voluntary and open to all families residing in MFN that require this service. Services will be prioritized based on need.

Reporting Relationship:

The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children Worker will work in collaboration with the Partner in Parenting Coordinator, Community Health Nurses, and Community Wellness Worker under the Supervision of the Nursing Supervisor. This position falls under the Health Services Department under the guidance Health Services Department Manager.

Essential Functions:

  • Knowledge and understanding of issues impacting parenting for MFN families.
  • Provide early interventions in the lives of children 0-6 and their families living in MFN.
  • Encourage and support the well-being of children and parents through community interaction and approaches.
  • Adhere to MFN’s protocol with Kina Gbezhgomi Child and Family Services when applicable.
  • Support Early Childhood Development programs at the community level that address AHBHC program goals.
  • Promote First Nation culture and language, nutrition, education, health promotion, social support, and parent/family involvement.
  • Use community-based intervention activities designed to help children 0–6 get the best start in life and promotion of positive parenting experiences.

Qualifications:

  • College diploma or equivalent, in Early Childhood Education (ECE), where the incumbent gains formal training in child growth development, and behaviour.
  • Minimum of 1 years’ experience working with children birth to 6 years of age and families, with an emphasis on parent education, training, and group dynamics.
  • Group facilitation experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to network and build working relationships with MFN departments and applicable agencies.
  • Excellent computer skills and literacy.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate (or willing to update).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills
  • Working knowledge with program reporting, statistical compilation, and ability to work within a team environment.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to own vehicle.
  • Knowledge of Ojibwe culture, language, and traditions (or willingness to learn).
  • Ability to work within a team.
