Job Title: PROCESSING ARCHIVIST: SACRAMENTAL RECORDS

Location: Chancery Office | Bishop Farrell Library & Archives (698 King Street W, Hamilton)

Hours: 32 hours per week, Monday to Friday

Contract Type: 4-month term (January to April); intended for co-op students (post-secondary)

Pay Rate: $23.00 per hour

Position Summary

The Processing Archivist: Sacramental Records will contribute to the preservation of historic records through the administration of the Sacramental Records Digitization Project. The project will see the creation of digital copies of sacramental registers containing historic baptismal, marriage, and death records for parishes throughout the province of Ontario. These records track the spiritual growth of the Diocese of Hamilton, and in addition are useful sources for genealogy and civil processes such as Canadian citizenship applications. The Processing Archivist will provide integral support in preserving and increasing access to these vital records.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Review sacramental registers and create condition reports.
  • Update sacramental registers as needed.
  • Create archival accession and descriptive records.
  • Develop tracking protocols and liaise with parish staff and the digitization firm regarding the progress of the project.
  • Prepare sacramental registers for shipping.
  • Review digital records for accuracy.
  • Research and respond to genealogy inquiries.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education preferred.
  • A degree or course work in library science, archival science, or another relevant field.
  • Experience with handling historic documents and preparing condition reports.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient computer and data entry skills, including experience with archival content management systems, accessioning, and creating descriptive records.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small-team environment.
