INDIGENOUS ADDICTION WORKER/RAAM CLINICIAN (49-26)

B’SAANIBAMAADSIWIN PROGRAM – RAPID ACCESS TO ADDICTION MEDICINE

Job Status: Permanent

Hours of work: 35 hours per week

Base office: Parry Sound. This position will involve working with the B’Saanibamaadsiwin program and requires knowledge and awareness of Indigenous culture and language.

Purpose of the Position: The Indigenous Addiction Worker/RAAM Clinician provides culturally responsive addiction counselling and support services to Indigenous individuals and families experiencing substance use challenges within the Districts of Muskoka and Parry Sound. This role includes comprehensive assessment, care planning, referrals, and supportive counselling, alongside community-based case management. The clinician works closely with community partners, including Rapid Access Addiction Medicine (RAAM) clinics, family physicians, hospitals, and withdrawal management services to deliver effective, holistic care. This position is part of the B’saanibamaadsiwin program, which strives to provide culturally safe and community-driven mental health and addiction services. The successful candidate will be supported by the broader B’saanibamaadsiwin team and regional addiction and mental health resources.

Education and Qualifications:

• Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, worldviews, and traditional practices, with specific knowledge of communities within Muskoka and Parry Sound.
• Experience working with Indigenous communities or organizations is strongly preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in a human service or health science discipline relevant to the role. Equivalency in education combined with significant relevant work and lived experience is strongly considered. Examples include:
• Diploma in human services or health sciences with specialization in addictions.
• Mental Health-related diploma with relevant experience and registration with a regulated health professional college.
• Practical experience providing supportive counselling, case management, and/or crisis intervention to individuals with mental health or substance use challenges (minimum one year preferred).
• Knowledge of traditional and non-traditional healing practices and the ability to collaborate effectively with elders, healers, and other Indigenous knowledge keepers.
• Awareness of the historical and current contexts affecting Indigenous health, including colonization, residential schools, treaties, and land claims.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict-resolution skills, emphasizing empathy, compassion, and cultural sensitivity.
• Ability to manage a varied workload, including responding effectively to high-risk situations.
• Proficiency with technology, including Microsoft Office suite, client information systems, and remote communication tools.
• Bilingualism in French or an Indigenous language is considered an asset.
• Valid Ontario G or G2 driver’s license, reliable transportation, and appropriate insurance coverage ($1,000,000 liability minimum).
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required.

Major Responsibilities:

• Provide culturally competent addiction counselling, assessments, and case management services.
• Develop individualized care plans, coordinate referrals, and advocate for client needs.
• Build community capacity through education, liaison, and stigma reduction initiatives.
• Collaborate closely with RAAM clinics, family physicians, hospitals, withdrawal management services, and other community partners.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation and participate in quality improvement and evaluation activities.
• Contribute to culturally responsive program development and community engagement efforts.

Salary scale: $29.85 to $39.09 per hour commensurate with qualifications and experience.
