Position Summary

The Promoter - Youth Development will be a part of the Youth Development section of Raising our Children, and will work to engage youth, develop youth programming, and build community capacity.

Accountability

The Promoter - Youth Development is directly accountable to the Manager - Raising our Children.

Qualifications

  • Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment)
  • Diploma in social work or health related field or a combination of education/experience as deemed acceptable by SLFNHA
  • Minimum 1 year work experience in public health and/or issues affecting youth
  • Experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation
  • Experience working with youth, and especially First Nations youth
  • Excellent communication skills, i.e. listening, oral, and written English skills, public speaking, making presentations
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Excellent keyboarding skills, able to perform word processing, create spreadsheets and graphics, and use other office equipment
  • Willing to travel
  • Valid Ontario Class G driver's license, along with regular access to a vehicle
  • Ability to perform the requirements of the role on a regular basis
  • Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects of the Sioux Lookout region is an asset

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Establishes and maintains a close working relationship with community health leadership and health and youth program staff to build capacity, promote awareness, and develop self-determination in programming and services.
  • Works closely with regional high schools to support community wellbeing initiatives amongst youth.
  • Develops and supports a social media strategy, health promotion activities, and resources to engage youth.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, evaluation, and quarterly reporting of the Raising Our Children work plan.
  • Supports and builds capacity of community-based workers through:

  • Acting as a mentor;
  • Developing and providing resources on the promotion of public health for youth;
  • Providing training;
  • Conducting workshops;
  • Creating a network of youth workers.
  • Builds capacity of youth around priority health issues.
  • Supports funding for youth development programming through advocacy and writing funding/grant proposals.
  • Conducts health promotion initiatives through community visits, school visits, videoconferences, webinars, radio shows, social media, etc.
  • Identifies and develops potential partnerships for regional and community-based youth programming.
  • Develops and shares best practices for youth community wellbeing programming.
  • Develops and facilitates programming for youth in community around mental and physical wellbeing.
  • Promotes SLFNHA's Approaches to Community Wellbeing department.
  • Actively participates on committees and other working groups as representatives for SLFNHA.
  • Advocates for youth to enhance health equity.
  • Performs other duties for SLFNHA as directed.

  • Must be willing to relocate to Sioux Lookout
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours
  • Must be willing to travel as needed
  • Occasional lifting up to 15 pounds
  • Preapproved overtime as required
  • Travel into First Nations communities as required
