Position Overview:As the Assistant Utilities Manager at Emerald Lake
Lodge, you will play a crucial role in supporting the Utilities Manager in
overseeing, maintaining, and optimizing our complex utility systems. You will
assist in leading a dedicated team to ensure the seamless operation of our
power generation, water treatment, wastewater management, and other critical
systems that keep our picturesque mountain lodge running smoothly. Your
expertise will contribute to maintaining the delicate balance between modern
comfort and environmental stewardship in our unique alpine setting
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. System
Management and Optimization:
·
Assist in overseeing the
operation, monitoring, and maintenance of ELL's comprehensive utility systems,
including:
o Power
Generation and Distribution: Help manage diesel generators, turbines, and the
propane bi-fuel system.
o Water
Treatment and Distribution: Support ensuring safe, high-quality water supply
throughout the property.
o Wastewater
Treatment and Collection: Assist in operating the treatment plant and managing
the collection system.
o Fire
Systems: Help maintain fire pumps and hydrants for emergency preparedness.
o Property
Vehicles: Support overseeing maintenance and operation of lodge vehicles.
o Fuels:
Assist in managing diesel, gasoline, and propane supplies.
o Hot
Tub: Help ensure proper operation and water quality of guest amenities.
·
Conduct daily system checks,
maintaining detailed parameter logs for all systems.
·
Assist in data analysis to ensure
all systems operate within optimal ranges, helping to identify trends and
potential issues.
·
Support the development and
implementation of strategies to enhance system efficiency and reduce energy
consumption.
·
Liaise with external contractors
for specialized maintenance and repairs as directed.
2. Team
Leadership and Development:
·
Support the Utilities Manager in
leading and mentoring the team of skilled professionals in the Utilities
Department.
·
Help foster a positive team
culture that embraces continuous learning, innovation, and the "One team,
one resort" philosophy.
·
Assist in team management aspects,
including:
o Supporting
recruitment and onboarding of new team members
o Helping
conduct comprehensive training programs on all utility systems
o Assisting
with regular performance evaluations and feedback
o Contributing
to professional development planning for team members
o Supporting
fair and efficient scheduling to ensure 24/7 coverage
·
Participate in and sometimes lead
regular team meetings to discuss operational updates, safety procedures, and
improvement initiatives.
3. Operational
Excellence:
·
Help develop, implement, and
refine preventative maintenance plans and schedules for all utility systems.
·
Assist in managing inventory of
equipment, spare parts, and consumables, ensuring optimal stock levels to
prevent operational disruptions.
·
Support collaboration with other
department heads to align utility operations with overall lodge objectives and
guest satisfaction goals.
·
Contribute to identifying and
implementing cost-saving measures and efficiency improvements across all
systems.
·
Uphold and acquire certifications
as needed.
·
Stay informed about emerging
technologies and industry best practices in sustainable lodge operations,
helping to recommend and implement upgrades.
4. Safety
and Compliance:
·
Support ensuring all operations
adhere to federal, provincial, and local safety standards, environmental
regulations, and operating permits.
·
Assist in implementing and
maintaining robust safety protocols, including:
o Confined
space entry procedures
o Fall
protection and working at heights
o Hazardous
material handling and storage
o Electrical
safety and lockout/tagout procedures
·
Help conduct regular safety audits
and assist in leading safety training sessions for the utilities team and other
relevant staff.
·
Maintain all necessary
certifications for system operations, including Small Wastewater System
Operator and Small Water System Operator qualifications.
·
Support compliance with all
regulatory reporting requirements, helping to prepare and submit reports as
needed.
5. Emergency
Response and Problem Solving:
·
Assist in developing,
implementing, and updating comprehensive emergency response procedures for
various scenarios.
·
Be on-call to respond to
emergencies outside normal working hours, demonstrating quick thinking and
decisive action in addressing urgent operational issues.
·
Help lead periodic emergency
drills to ensure team readiness for various scenarios.
·
Support troubleshooting of complex
system issues, using analytical skills to diagnose problems and implement
effective solutions.
6. Administrative
Duties:
·
Assist in managing department
budgets, including annual budget preparation and ongoing expense tracking.
·
Support overseeing payroll for the
utilities team, ensuring accurate and timely processing.
·
Help develop and maintain
comprehensive SOPs for all utility systems and processes.
·
Assist in preparing detailed
reports on system performance, efficiency improvements, and cost-saving
initiatives for lodge management.
·
Support maintaining meticulous
records and documentation for all utility systems, including maintenance logs,
repair histories, and regulatory compliance documents.
·
Help manage relationships with
vendors and contractors, assisting in negotiations and ensuring high-quality
service delivery.
Skills & Experience:
· Proven
experience in utility operations, preferably in a remote or hospitality
setting.
· Strong technical
knowledge of power generation systems, water and wastewater treatment, and
general mechanical/electrical systems.
· Certifications
in Small Wastewater System Operation and Small Water System Operation (or
willingness to obtain).
· Valid driver's
license and ability to operate various types of vehicles and equipment.
· Demonstrated
leadership skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
· Strong
problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to system maintenance.
· Proficiency in
computer systems, including Microsoft Office and specialized utility management
software.
· Ability to work
in a dynamic environment, often extending beyond regular working hours.
· Physical
capability to perform tasks in various conditions, including confined spaces
and at heights.
· Commitment to
environmental stewardship and sustainable operations.
· Excellent
communication skills and ability to interact professionally with staff, guests,
and external contractors.
·
Ability to step into the Utilities Manager role
when required.
