Position Overview

Reporting to the Corporate Controller, the Divisional Controller, Canada will be responsible for the oversight of the day-to-day accounting operations, month-end close tasks, and financial reporting (IFRS) for a fast-scaling department supporting the rapidly growing US business. This role will work closely with the operations team and will be responsible for accurate and timely internal financial reporting to senior management. Managing a small, but growing team, this is a key role that will require an entrepreneurial mind-set to assist with strengthening the control environment, driving process improvements, expanding system utilization, and assisting with other tasks on an as needed basis as we continue to grow.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Canadian accounting team’s daily operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, sales tax, payroll, fixed assets, manufacturing accounting, and general ledger.
  • Manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to deliver timely and accurate financial statements; ensure compliance with IFRS.
  • Assist with maintenance/ compliance with all relevant tax, regulatory, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Establish, document, and improve accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
  • Mentor, train, and develop a growing team of accounting staff to support team growth and career development.
  • Prepare detailed divisional financial statements, management reports, and operational dashboards to provide a clear view of financial performance.
  • Understand the financial statement numbers to discuss rationally and succinctly.
  • Create and maintain monthly accounting tasks calendar; ensure that timelines are being adhered to and communicated to peers.
  • Review balance sheet reconciliations at month end; advise and assist Corporate Controller on complex accounting matters.
  • Support the annual audit and quarterly reviews by providing documentation and working with auditors as needed.
  • Review and understand manufacturing process/accounting as well as intercompany transactions with US counterpart.
  • Assist with the creation of training manuals and process workflows.
  • Assist with ERP maintenance and enhancement projects.
  • Build strong working relationships with operations, IT, internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop and report on a set of operational accounting KPI’s.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; completion of CPA and/or MBA is strongly preferred
  • A minimum of 5-7+ years’ experience of managing an accounting or finance team
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS, internal controls, and financial reporting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to identify problems and provide solutions
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build relationships with internal stakeholders, staff, auditors
  • Proficiency with ERP, AP, billing, and payroll systems (NetSuite experience a plus)
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel; proficient in the rest of Microsoft Office
  • Demonstrated knowledge of change management
  • Keen sense of curiosity and an ability to research, analyze data and explain numbers
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment and able to deal with change
